President Barack Obama marked the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision on Sunday.

In a statement, Obama said the ruling was more than just about establishing a woman’s right to abortion. He said it also made clear that the government: Should not intrude on private family matters.

North Carolina recently passed legislation that places further restrictions on women seeking abortions. The Woman’s Right to Know Act passed by state lawmakers in 2011 and requires women to seek counseling and wait at least 24 hours before receiving an abortion.
