Authorities say a 16-year-old high school student was injured earlier this morning after her throat was slashed at Southern Nash High School.

Officers say that a 15-year-old girl used scalpel to cut Jasmine Barnes’ neck from behind.

The student was taken into custody and charged assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

The victim was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Sources say the girl’s thyroid was cut during the incident.

This was the second incident in a week that resulted in police being called to Southern Nash High.

Deputies came to the school’s campus last Thursday after a fight between two people was reported. When authorities arrived the school was locked down and deputies found a 17-year-old trying to cut himself with a piece of glass.
