SessNew Orleans rapper Sess 45 stands in the lobby of the Kellogg Conference Center on the campus of Gallaudet University in Washington, DC among a group of suited individuals.  At first glance Sess 45’s dreds, gold caps and hip hop stance would lead you to believe he was a fish out of water – but he isn’t.  He, along with the suited individuals, are in DC lobbying for clean air. Sess, who also owns a retail record store in New Orleans, has joined the delegation of individuals from across the country to ensure the future of his children and the children of  our country.

It’s not his first time in DC to lobby for clean air.  After the BP Oil Spill Sess brought a delegation from New Orleans to advocate for renewable energy and clean air.

Below Sess explains why he continues to come back to advocate for the environment.

I am a retail record store owner and a hip hop music artist. Music is something I’m passionate about, but so our right to clean air. So with the eight year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaching, the BP oil spill, and a new spill this year, I’m struggling with the ideals of this administration and the effects of the policies being implemented.

Clean air is one of the most important elements needed to live a healthy life. For my future and the future of my kids, doing my part to keep as much pollution out of the air is very important to me. But Congress and President Obama have to do their part, too. And to me, the best thing that they can do is to enforce the laws and regulations that have already been passed and apply harsher penalties to those facilities that break these laws and regulations.

As an artist and an activist, I am inspired by God, life, and my family and friends who help motivate me to do the work I am destined for. And representing New Orleans and Louisiana on a national platform in a united push for clean air across the country is part of that destiny.
