 Spike Lee Knicks game.jpg

There’s been a lot of huffing, puffing and hee-hawing about the New York Knicks this year, and not in a good way. With a record of 28 – 40 after a seven game win streak, they haven’t exactly been giving basketball  fans a reason to plan a parade.

But with the recent addition of Phil Jackson to the front office as president of the team, I’ve noticed split reactions. On one side, the ever negative and perpetually pessimistic Knick “fans” are quick to expect the worst, screaming that the 11-time NBA champion will change nothing for the better. (Ridiculous) And on the other side, I’m seeing all these cats who were so swift to kick dirt on the team a week ago now jocking Jackson, singing the praises and rocking blue and orange as if there isn’t fresh dust on their shoes. (Disgusting). The common denominator seems to be people forgetting what it is to be a real fan of the franchise. So with that in mind, I figured I’d take a few minutes to explain why thick or thin, win or lose, I’m Knicks till it’s over.

1)   I’m A Native: I can’t take the idea of another city bragging about having New Yorkers on their nuts. I know there are tons of newbies that pack their bags for the Big Apple looking to make it here so they can make it anywhere. But I was born and raised in the city that never sleeps. Personal pride in my hometown won’t allow me to wave any other colors.

2)   Bandwagon Riders Are Scum: Ask any team sports fan anywhere. They’ll all agree that there isn’t anything much worse than someone who jumps to root for another team just because they start winning.  Would you be cool with some new cats coming around you showing you all their teeth and acting like you’re the greatest the day after you won the lottery? No? Then don’t be that guy… nobody likes that guy.

3)   All Teams Lose: People are quick to slam the team because they haven’t won a championship in many moons. The bad part is, this criticism will come from cats whose team has never won a championship ever. When the criticism comes from New Yorkers, who managed to diss last years Knick team that won 52 our of 82 regular season games, finish 1st in the east and went to the 2nd round of the playoffs, you ‘ll see they are basically spoiled thanks to the domination of the Yankees, the most winningest franchise in the history of all sports… just remind them that every year, only one team gets the ring. Everyone else lost too… relax.

Now I’m not saying that I don’t get mad when we make dumb trades, get lame players or do something stupid that costs us games (Looking at YOU James Dolan!) But the fact is, this is what it means to be a fan. Anyone can cheer when things are awesome, but the real fans stand by the team, win, lose or draw. That’s why I’m still a Knicks fan. Because remembering the hard times… the oh so many hard times, makes the victories that much sweeter…#Knickstape
