Jamal Bryant These hoes aint loyal

Between Pastor Jamal Bryant‘s assertion that “these hoes ain’t loyal” and select commentary about Rihanna‘s choice of attire for the CFDA Awards, men known for throwing their penises around but referring to women as whores are having quite the week.

Discussing Pontius Pilate’s refusal to listen to his wife’s pleadings on Jesus’ behalf, Bryant told parishioners, “Every sister, elbow another sister, and say, ‘He should have listened.’ Every brother, tap another brother, and say, ‘I should have listened to her.’” Then he went on to declare, “Old saints, y’all forgive me, but I gotta tell you, These hoes ain’t loyal!”

To quote Chris Brown’s misogynistic, materialistic, and mommy-issues laden single to condemn a certain type of woman in favor of another is peddling patriarchy under the guise of praising the Lord. Jesus would not be bopping in the pews to Chris Brown boasting about his ability to turn a “broke bitch rich” when it is clear that he doesn’t particularly care for “broke bitches.” That’s about as Christian as me rubbing my nipples with $100 bills while grunting like Rick Ross for 30 minutes.

This is Bryant exploiting select Biblical text to talk about the redeeming quality of men while suggesting that only a certain kind of woman is worthy of respect.

In response to his now-infamous sermon, Bryant took to Twitter to declare:

“Don’t critique a quote when you never heard message. 20 seconds of a 30 minute message is an incomplete assessment.”

In some cases, sure, but certainly not in his. I could literally hand Jamal Bryant a roll of quarters and a big bottle of detergent and he still wouldn’t be able to clean up the ugly sentiment his remarks sought to convey.

Not that he hasn’t tried. I despise apologies that are prefaced with “If I offended you….” You know you were offensive and based on your choice of wording, you don’t particularly care that you’ve offended someone so much as you are bothered by the unwanted attention you’ve gotten as a result of you saying exactly how you feel. Even if you changed your phrasing, the gist of your opinion isn’t any less biting.

Which reminds me of the men who have taken to social media to criticize Rihanna over her choice of attire to accept her Fashion Icon Award at the 2014 CFDA Awards. I saw men who I know for a fact have body counts as high as recent wars going on and on about the difference between a “classy woman” and a “whore-tramp-slut” like Rihanna. This is rooted in the idea that a woman cannot be in control of her sexuality and on her terms without presumably spreading wide eagle for any and all available men. And even if she did, it’s not okay for her, but it’s certainly fine for a man.

It reminds me of a tweet I saw this week retweeted into my timeline:

“How you wanna be a wife and mother when you got all your body parts exposed on Instagram, bae?”

Because women can be whatever they want while simultaneously being something else, i.e. sexual being, wife, Mother, astronaut, and a smarter tweeter than this guy.

The irony of it all is that by his own definition, Rev. Bryant himself is a hoe.

Just ask his ex-wife.

I’m sure many of the men criticizing Rihanna would be hit with a less than pristine label if judged by their own clothing and relationship habits.

But of course, they’re protected by patriarchy. That allows Bryant to have a platform to damn “hoes” and baby mamas.

While looking at coverage of Bryant’s remarks, I saw one blogger write:

“My thoughts are… the words are insignificant if the intent is pure.”

Yeah, that’s just it: There is no purity in Bryant’s intentions.

Sure, he’s pretending to respect “Godly women,” but the reality is if you only like women presented in a certain package – one patriarchy approves of – you don’t truly like women at all.

Likewise, when you complain about the feminization of the church and “sanctified sissies,” you’re exposing your misogyny. Jamal Bryant likes women about as much as a Grand Wizard wants to cuddle with President Barack Obama.

The irony of it all is, women and gays keep so many of these churches running. It’s a shame they allow these women-bashing clergyman to continuously debase them.
