A teacher at Bryson Elementary School in Simpsonville, S.C., is under investigation for tossing a student’s shoes in the trash and making her walk barefoot last week, WSPA-TV reports.

The first-grader, 6-year-old Taraji Edwards, admitted to the news outlet that she continued fiddling with her sandal strap after her teacher asked her to stop doing that at least seven times. But the strap was bothering her, the little girl explained.

Taraji said the teacher got fed up and threw her shoes in the trash. The teacher then made the child walk barefoot in the classroom before permitting her to retrieve them from the trash.

“I feel embarrassed, and I did not like how she treated me…That’s not a way I can make friends,” the girl stated in her interview with the news outlet.

Taraji added: “I do not want to get treated like that. I’m only six.”

The child’s mother, Chartrese Edwards, said she learned about the incident from Taraji the next day when her daughter cried about having to wear the sandals to school that morning.

Edwards, outraged, went to the school to talk with the principal and teacher. The teacher “easily confessed,” Edwards told the news station.

Greenville County Schools said in a statement that it’s “seriously” looking into the Edwards’ complaint.

The statement continued: “The district does not tolerate embarrassment or humiliation as a form of punishment. This matter is being thoroughly investigated by Bryson Elementary and by district administrators.”

Taraji’s parents want the teacher disciplined. But the school district said protocol prevents them from identifying the teacher or revealing disciplinary action that it takes against school personnel.

Meanwhile, the family is considering whether Taraji should return to Bryson Elementary. The parents launched a GoFundMe campaign, seeking to raise $10,000 to send Taraji to a private school.
