Aaron McGruder has done it again. Never afraid of risky topics, he always reveals daring topics that most shy away from when it comes to his much loved cartoon The Boondocks such is always the hilarious case. This time McGruder went in hard, to cover the topics that many have already sneered and hissed at when it comes to the success of play write turned movie producer Tyler Perry.
McGruder’s take on his chitlin circuit gospel plays, which he describes as “…a homo-erotic christian theatre cult.”
McGruder creates a dancing “Ma Duke” character, who was definitely a parody of Madea. We all should have seen this coming sooner or later. n “Pause,” an episode written by McGruder, a thinly veiled version of Perry (Winston Jerome) is portrayed as a closeted, cross-dressing cult leader whose love of the Christian faith is a mask for his true sexuality. There’s definitely some classic quotes in the episode, like Riley’s take on “no-homo:” “How I know you not homo unless you say ‘no homo’?” And while the “Winston Jerome” character bears little physical resemblance to Perry, the reference is obvious…
The Jerome character wears a pink sweater, is surrounded by bare-chested muscular men and constantly proclaims his love of Jesus Christ as he attempts to seduce Granddad (John Witherspoon), the guardian of Huey and Riley Freeman, at the center of the series.
