The storm’s projected path shows it heading toward the U.S. East Coast later this week, possibly clipping North Carolina this weekend.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said that Irene has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and was moving about 12 mph. Irene could become a Category 2 hurricane by the time it reaches Florida.
