Police say Kleber shot Roy Kleber of Vero Beach, Fla., in January 2011. The older man had come to Greenville to help his son move to what Kevin Kleber claimed was a new job at Walt Disney World after getting a master’s degree.

Kevin R. Kleber, 26, also shot himself in the leg during the Jan. 9, 2011, incident, prosecutors at his murder hearing said. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge J. Carlton Cole in to 112 to 144 months in prison.

Kleber had lied to Roy Erwin Kleber, 55, of Vero Beach, Fla., about pursuing his master’s degree at ECU. He had not attended class at the school for nearly three years while taking money from his father.

He told his family he was going to school and, ultimately, that he graduated with a master’s degree in business administration, Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Robb told Cole.

Roy Kleber had come to his son’s home at University Park Apartments on 10th Street under the impression he was moving him to a job at Walt Disney World, Robb said.

The lies became too much for the defendant, Robb said, and he shot his father “in moment of desperation” from a distance of about 8 feet into the back of the neck. The older Kleber died from brain and spine injuries, Robb said.

“He kept lying and kept getting money from his father, but he also was getting eviction notices from his landlord. He never had a job waiting at Disney World,” Robb said.

Kleber initially told Greenville police and Detective Scott Stanton that as he and his father were preparing the last load for the moving truck, a black man invaded the apartment, grabbed his exposed gun from a table and fired on his father during a robbery, Robb said. Kleber said he also was shot in the leg by the alleged robber.

When officers arrived at the apartment, they found Roy Kleber in cardiac arrest and Kevin Kleber attempting CPR on him, Robb said.

In reality, Kevin Kleber never attended grad school while taking money from his father. He initially tried to blame the shooting on a black man, but eventually confessed. He was sentenced to between nine and 12 years in prison.
