Sherman Hemsley, star of the hit sitcom The Jeffersons, has died.

Hemsley died in at home in El Paso, Texas. Details surrounding Hemsley’s death have yet to be revealed.

Many remember Sherman Hemsley for his portrayal of hard edged characters with hearts of gold. Hemsley made his breakthrough on Norman Lear’s All In The Family. His role on the sitcom became so popular he got the Jeffersons show as a spin-off. The Jeffersons aired for eleven seasons, running from January 1975 until June 1985. During his tenure on The Jeffersons, he was nominated an Emmy Award.

Hemsley returned to television a year after The Jeffersons was canceled in another popular role. He played Ernest Frye, a dubious church deacon on the show Amen. Helmsley inhabited the role of Ernest Frye for five seasons until the show was canceled in 1991. Sherman Helsmley continued to work well into the mid to late-2000s. Besides acting, Helmsley even cut a record in the late 80s called “Eyes In The Dark.”

Although Sherman Hemsley is no longer with us, we will always remember his comedic one-liners and that George Jefferson walk he made famous. Rest in peace Sherman Hemsley.
