If you’ve been paying attention to the hip-hop blogosphere and the Billboard charts you know that Kendrick Lamar‘s got next. Actually it might be more accurate to say that the 25-year-old has got now. His first major label album, good kid, M.A.A.D. city debuted at No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart with 241,000 and was reviewed as one of the best rap releases of 2012. The term “breakout star” was created for this type of success.

“A.D.H.D.”

It may seem like this Compton kid with the Dr. Dre co-sign came out of nowhere, but that’s not the case; Kendrick and his Top Dawg Entertainment crew have been cultivating a loyal fan base for years with indie releases like 2011′s Section.80 and 2010′s Overly Dedicated. As a lyricist, his technical skill rivals flow masters like Busta Rhymes and Eminem before him, and as a storyteller the tales he spins are as intricate and compelling as those of Slick Rick and Andre 3000.

“Monster”

Perfectly balancing style and substance expect Kendrick Lamar to become a household name in the coming years.
