According to The New York Times, the city that gave us classic cars, Motown music and Coney Island chili dogs just went bankrupt! Yes you read it right they went bankrupt.

According to Gov. Rick Snyder,

“This is a difficult step, but the only viable option to address a problem that has been six decades in the making.”

Six decades is an entire lifetime for some people. So does that mean that everyone that is sixty and under in the city who are natives of Detroit have only ever lived in a city in despair? We hope not as Detroit is not just dark and bleak the way some people have made it out to be.

Detroit like most  every city has it’s wonderful spots as well. They are built from a rich cultural tradition. They have entire populations of people that you really will not find in other areas of the country. They have a rich work ethic which is what makes the downfall of the auto industry and all of the jobs that left the area so heartbreaking. And they are super resilient people. They take a hit and keep on pushing that’s just who they are.

Said city worker Terence Tyson,

“It’s sad, but you could see the writing on the wall. This has been coming for ages.”

Said Diane Robinson, an office worker in the city,

“For a struggling family I can see bankruptcy, but for a big city like this, can it really work? What will happen to city retirees on fixed incomes?”

This is sad to see an American treasure going down like this but we hope that they will come roaring back just as strong as the auto industry that they have dominated for so long.
