Samsung Galaxy Presents JAY Z and Kanye West At SXSW

Kanye West has forcefully asserted himself as a lot of things: an MC, a fashion nut , a native son of Chicago, a(n honorary) doctor, and the unofficial Chancellor of Guest Appearances. West and fellow Chicagoan/new Roc Nation signee Vic Mensa were the surprise guests at the Open Mic event run by Chance the Rapper in Chicago’s South Side yesterday (May 11), and they all but tore the roof off the building. Kanye even performed “We Don’t Care,” a rare sight considering that he doesn’t really perform College Dropout tracks outside of “Jesus Walks” anymore.

‘Ye is widely known for having a flair for the theatrical; I mean, look at the Yeezus tour and his Fashion Week rollout from earlier this year. In keeping with his thespian-esque approach, Kanye takes it upon himself to show up unannounced at a lot of live shows and events, especially recently. Like him or leave him, ‘Ye knows how to put on one hell of a show, and here are six that were complete surprises.

Bulls Game

This past weekend, Kanye shocked Chicago Bulls fans by showing up for a quick set of “All Day” in the middle of the Bulls/Cavaliers game that night. I still don’t know if this or him caught smiling on Vine makes me happier.

Dave Chappelle @ Radio City Music Hall

At the end of the first show of his hot ticket 10-show run at Radio City Music Hall last year, Chappelle sprang ‘Ye on an unsuspecting crowd, who got caught up in the palette cleanser that was his set of “Jesus Walks,” “Gold Digger,” and “New Slaves.” New York definitely loves the West.

Odd Future Flog Naw Carnival

Early-era Kanye was a *huge* influence on many members of the Odd Future clique, particularly frontman Tyler, The Creator; all the more fitting that ‘Ye surprised Tyler at the end of the 2013 Flog Naw Carnival to perform “New Slaves” and an extremely rare performance of “Late” from Late Registration – with both Tyler and Earl Sweatshirt. Once in a lifetime doesn’t even begin to describe it.

TNGHT show

During a TNGHT (producers Hudson Mohawke & Lunice) show in Brooklyn back in 2012, Kanye hopped across the Music Hall of Williamsburg stage while they played his track “Cold.” Mind you, he didn’t have a mic or spit any audible bars, but he brings the energy at the 2:10 mark.

Coachella w/ Stromae

Kanye’s got a fair share of remixes under his belt, and his appearance on the remix of Belgian artist Stromae‘s “Alors on Danse” is no exception. After his surprise appearance during The Weeknd’s Coachella set that Saturday, he showed up during Stromae’s set on Sunday to cut loose with the singer.

Super Saturday w/ Rihanna

What was originally advertised as a Rihanna-only pre-Super Bowl show this year turned into a Rihanna/’Ye co-headlining gig, with both artists running through their respective hits before busting out into “FourFiveSeconds.”
