City officials and supporters of Habitat for Humanity have joined the City of Durham for the dedication of Hope Crossing – North Carolina’s first affordable green community. Its located at 904 Belmont Drive in northeast Durham. Construction began for the surrounding community in 2007. The homes have numerous green features, from sun panels on the roof to help heat water inside, to barrels outside catching rainwater runoff for watering the lawn. The homes are also equipped with Energy Star appliances and energy-saving light bulbs. A dedication ceremony this past weekend marked the completion of the project and a celebration of the volunteers who help Habitat throughout the year.
