Updated: 11:18 p.m. Gov. McCorey has declared a state of emergency. McCrorey has initiated efforts to deploy the National Guard in Charlotte upon request of CMPD Police Chief Kerr Putney.

At least one person was seriously injured after peaceful protest turned violent in uptown Charlotte.

The shooting occurred after relatively quiet protest in Marshall moved to the EpiCentre area about 9 p.m. An hour earlier, there were two protests taking place in Marshall Park. One group issued a five point action plan and sang spirituals.

  1. Transparent investigation.
  2. Open review and full report of deadly force of officer-involved shooting.
  3. Public briefing on current de-escalation policies and training
  4. Transparent plan to address implicit bias and systemic racism
  5. Active and aggressive plan to regain community trust, faith and cooperation

Next to them, another group waved the African national flag and spoke angrily about police shootings.

Protestors moved from Marshall Park to the EpiCentre, which was already the scene of nearby protests on College Street. Police deployed tear gas near the front of the Omni, according to media reports. Business in the EpiCentre and the Square closed earlier in anticipation of the protests.

As the protest deteriorated into violence, booms could be heard uptown.

Agitators smashed windows at the Hornets store at Time Warner Cable, set at least one trash can on fire and smashed windows at uptown businesses. Throughout the evening, police tossed tear gas into the crowds to try to drive agitators from uptown.
