Duke head basketball coach Mike Kryzewski is taking some time away from the team for a while. Coach K will has to undergo back surgery that will have him out of commission for a while. On Monday the school announced that Coach K will coach Wednesday against Georgia Tech, and then step away to have the surgery which should remove a fragment of a herniated disk from his lower back.
Coach K is expected to be out for at least four weeks.
Assistant coach Jeff Capel will take over while Kryzewski recovers. Capel’s first game will be Saturday against Boston College.
The 69-year-old Coach K had four surgeries during the offseason to replace his left knee, repair his left ankle, and fix a hernia.
Duke is currently 12-2 after losing to Virginia Tech on Saturday without Grayson Allen who has been suspended indefinitely after tripping an opposing player earlier in the season.
