Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya schooled a well-meaning reporter who asked him an awkward and ignorant question on the Oscars red carpet this past Sunday night. After the reporter commented that Get Out “ticked a lot of boxes” and “raised a lot of important things,” Kaluuya responded “We’re not boxes though. Articulating a black experience isn’t a box. It’s like, what we are articulating is our truth. We are human beings.”
While Daily Mail titled the story “Get Out Star Daniel Kaluuya Snaps At Reporter,” we think you’ll find that he was professional and calm. In fact, the woman who posted the viral footage commented “A reminder that marginalised actors and filmmakers shouldn’t have to educate those of us asking the Qs. But if they do (and show epic patience as here), listen #Oscars.” Well said, Terri.
