An off-duty Pitt County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who tried to rob him at an automatic teller machine Wednesday night, Greenville police said.

Police said that a man armed with a handgun approached the deputy at ATM at the State Employees Credit Union, 2296 Charles Blvd., around 10:30 p.m. The man demanded money, but the deputy pulled out his own handgun and fired, police said.

The suspect was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where he died.

The deputy wasn’t injured.

Authorities haven’t released the names of the deputy and suspect.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, following standard procedure for all officer-involved shootings
