Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) — Polls opened across Afghanistan on Saturday morning, in what marks the war-torn country’s fourth national election since 2004.

But the vote is being threatened by insurgent attacks and a legacy of fraud and corruption that undermined the credibility of the last national election, which was held a year ago. A predawn earthquake shook the Afghan capital Saturday, but does not appear to have made a significant impact on the election.

More than 2,500 candidates are competing for 249 seats in Afghanistan’s Wolesi Jirga, or lower house of parliament
