Today is National HIV Testing Day.National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) is an annual event meant to raise awareness of the importance of knowing one’s HIV status and encourage at-risk individuals to receive an HIV test.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV; of these, an estimated 21% do not know they are infected.Researchers found that in Baltimore; Atlanta; Newark, N.J.; New York City; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; and Washington, the annual rate of infection was 24 per 10,000 black women. Nationally, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that black women become infected at a rate of 5 per 10,000.
