Updated_SAG_Logo_ColorThe nominations for the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards have been released and two films, directed by black men, dealing with slavery and civil rights lead the way.

12 Years a Slave and Lee Daniels’” The Butler garnered a total of seven nominations, in addition to being largely successful at the box office.

Both films received Best Ensemble Cast, Male Actor in a Leading Role (Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Forest Whitaker), and Supporting nods for 12 Years’ Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o and Oprah Winfrey for The Butler.

Films that receive multiple SAG nominations (and wins) are often recognized at the Academy Awards, which fares well for the nominees.
