Of course, the best advice is to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. However, if you must go out, AAA notes that there are a few things that you can do to reduce your risk on the road.

1. Always wear your seat belt.

2. Avoid driving when tired.

3. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never run your vehicle in an enclosed building, like a garage.

4. Check your tire pressure. Make sure they are properly inflated.

5. Keep at least half a tank of gasoline in your vehicle at all times.

6. If possible, try not to use your hand brake. Winter weather may cause your cables to freeze when parked overnight.

7. Avoid using cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand).

8. Take the time to look and steer where you want to go.

9. Check the weather report prior to getting on the road.

10. Let others know your route, destination and estimated time of arrival.

11. Don’t leave your phone! Make sure to grab your cell before hitting the road.

12. If you run into trouble on the road, try to stay with your vehicle. It provides temporary shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you.
