You are either in Raleigh or Durham. You only hear tourist say Raleigh-Durham. These are two different places, saying Raleigh-Durham is like calling your first child by the middle child’s name and saying, “ You know who you are”. Yes , both rank high in places to live and retire but there are differences between Durham and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Both cities scream HBCU PRIDE! As an HBCU Alum, the culture is dope! While being in Raleigh and visiting Durham, you can tell the difference in the two places. As I researched the following institutions, North Carolina reigns as the first in a few areas.

Raleigh, as it is the State Capitol of North Carolina it is also home to the first Historically Black College University to offer a four-year medical degree and the first to allow women; Shaw University. Along with St.Augustine University, which is noted to be the first HBCU to have campus commercial radio (WAUG-AM 750) and television (WAUG-TV 68) stations.

Durham or to many “Bull City ”, is where you’ll get to join North Carolina Central University (NCCU) for their legendary 10:40am breaks and destress. Not always a party, but NCCU was the first liberal arts school, that had a few names, like:

(1910) National Religious Training School and Chautauqua, then it was sold in 1915.

(1923) Durham State Normal School

(1925) North Carolina College for Negroes

Both cities are rich in the culture of Historically Black College Universities. One of the main reasons you can catch K 97.5 on a epic College Tour to embrace the love of history , education, and the spirit of universities we’d like to acknowledge!

So to all the students; open the textbooks , take notes, and make sure you find time to journal. You come first!
