Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton is ready to fight the good fight as a civil servant. Fulton announced on Sunday that she is running for Miami-Dade County Commissioner. After the death of her son Trayvon, Fulton has been outspoken about gun violence in the Black community.

She wrote in a statement:

“My time as a public servant began 30 years ago at Miami-Dade County. Since 2012, I have advocated tirelessly to empower our communities and make them safer. But the work is not done. I am proud to announce that I will run to represent District 1 on the county commission.”

Fulton also said,

“At first I didn’t want to be the voice for Trayvon after he did. But I decided, I have no choice. Now I’m called to act and called to serve. It became clear to me there’s an opportunity to turn our family’s tragedy into something positive for many other families.”

She ended her message by stating:

“Until recently, I didn’t see myself as someone who would run. If not me, then who? If not now, then when? Some only know me as Trayvon Martin’s mom. Hi, I’m Sybrina Fulton, and I’m running for Miami-Dade County Commissioner.”
