A jury in Mississippi has ruled in favor of five African American strippers who sued their employer because of work conditions that weren’t the same as their white co-workers.

A U.S. District judge ruled last year that the strippers were discriminated against on the basis of their race. This week a jury awarded $3.3 million in damages and future suffering to the women who worked at Danny’s Downtown Cabaret in Jackson.

The club was investigated and sued by The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission years ago for limiting when black women could work and issuing fines if they didn’t show up for work. At the same time, white strippers were not faced with the same penalties. Managers at Danny’s also were accused of using racial slurs against black dancers.
