In a recent interview with RoyalTea, Durham’s own Dasan Ahanu offered a deep dive into his upcoming production, The Death of Cochise, set to premiere at the Carolina Theatre on August 20. Ahanu, an acclaimed poet and writer, emphasized the importance of creating a piece that reflects the community and city he calls home.
“I want the audience to see their city and their community represented in this production,” Ahanu shared, highlighting the personal connection and relevance the play holds for the people of Durham.
Death of Cochise is a multi-media production featuring Ahanu alongside fellow award-winning poet and performer Bluz. Together, they bring a dynamic mix of verse, drama, and vivid imagery to the stage, using the art of emceeing and powerful storytelling to explore themes of identity, culture, struggle, and responsibility. The play follows two emcee poets as they navigate through a city on the edge, witnessing rising tensions and frustrations. When news of a tragic loss reaches them, the artists realize they must act to prevent their community from erupting in chaos.
