A Cary man was arrested early Monday morning at North Carolina State University after allegedly “waving a handgun in the air” along Hillsborough Street.

Zachary Olson, 24, was charged with felony possession of a firearm on educational property and misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon. Olson brought a Ruger Max-9 pistol onto campus and was taken into custody by NC State University Police.

The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. near a Chipotle on Hillsborough Street. Police responded to reports of a man waving a gun and arrested Olson on Dan Allen Drive.

Witnesses described Olson, who was wearing khaki shorts and a purple shirt, as “suspicious.” According to police radio traffic, he threatened a student, claiming he would “teach them a lesson,” before walking towards nearby fraternity houses.

Olson, who previously worked at the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, is no longer employed there, according to District Attorney Lorrin Freeman. The university confirmed that Olson is not affiliated with NC State as a student or employee. He was released on a $3,000 bond.
