Kendrick Lamar  is known for his masterful storytelling and often weaves inspiration from cultural icons into his work.

Among the most intriguing theories about the Compton rapper is his connection to The Wiz, the 1978 reimagining of The Wizard of Oz starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.

From thematic parallels to direct musical references, fans believe The Wiz has left an indelible mark on Kendrick’s artistry.

The Wiz is a tale of self-discovery, courage, and overcoming fear, themes that are central to Kendrick’s body of work.

In good kid, m.A.A.d city, Kendrick crafts a narrative of a young man navigating the chaotic environment of Compton, much like Dorothy’s journey through the fantastical and perilous land of Oz. Both protagonists face trials that test their resolve, ultimately realizing that the answers they seek lie within themselves.

Kendrick’s exploration of identity and purpose mirrors the journeys of The Wiz’s iconic characters.

The Scarecrow seeks a brain, the Tin Man a heart, and the Cowardly Lion courage all reflecting aspects of Kendrick’s introspection, as seen in songs like “FEAR.” and “u.”

Kendrick’s connection to The Wiz goes beyond themes and it extends directly into his music.

In his 2024 track “Euphoria,” aimed at Drake, Kendrick sampled The Wiz at the very beginning. A reversed clip of the line “Everything they say about me is true!” can be heard, setting an eerie and assertive tone. The sample comes from a pivotal moment in the film, and adds an extra layer of defiance to the track’s message.

Fast-forward to today, Kendrick’s newly released album GNX offers another nod to the film. On the track “Hey Now,” fans can hear a familiar sound: a beat inspired by the tense subway scene from The Wiz.

The haunting rhythm and pulsating percussion underscore the song’s theme of navigating an unpredictable and dangerous world, perfectly mirroring the film’s iconic moment.

Kendrick has never explicitly stated his admiration for The Wiz, but the evidence of its impact on his work is compelling. Whether through intentional homage or subconscious inspiration, the film’s themes and soundscapes seem to resonate deeply with his artistic vision.
