Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. citizen from Texas, is accused of driving a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street around 3:15 a.m. Central Time. Authorities said the attack appeared intentional, and the FBI confirmed Jabbar is now deceased.
Jabbar has ties to North Carolina, where he once lived and served in the military. He was stationed at Fort Bragg—now Fort Liberty—during his Army career, which lasted from 2007 to 2015. He also served in the Army Reserves until 2020, when he was honorably discharged. A 2013 photo from the 82nd Airborne Division’s Facebook page shows him working as an IT specialist.
In 2015, Jabbar pleaded guilty to DWI charges in North Carolina, according to CNN. He was placed on probation for 12 months and required to complete a substance abuse assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation programs.
Voting records show he lived in Fayetteville, and divorce filings in Texas listed his employer as Fort Bragg. His ex-wife’s name also matches divorce records filed in Cumberland County.
Jabbar’s military and personal history is now under scrutiny as investigators look into the Bourbon Street incident.
