WCPSS Could Raise School Lunch Prices

RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County Public Schools is considering an increase in school meal prices, marking what could be the fourth consecutive hike for families.
The district’s Nutrition Services Department says rising supply costs, staffing expenses, and low funding have pushed the school lunch program into a deficit. Senior Director Tiffany Lawrence noted that the current budget is unsustainable without additional revenue.
“We’re facing challenges that threaten the long-term stability of our program,” Lawrence said during a recent update.
Currently, 36% of Wake County students qualify for free or reduced-price meals. On average, the district serves more than 50,000 lunches daily.
In an effort to boost participation, staff are also working on improving meal options to make school lunches more appealing to students who typically bring food from home.
