Scam Alert
Source: General / Radio One

Drivers across multiple states, including North Carolina, are being warned about a convincing new scam text impersonating the DMV.

The text message claims to be from the North Carolina DMV and warns recipients of unpaid traffic tickets or toll charges. It threatens penalties, including suspension of vehicle registration and driving privileges for 30 days if payment isn’t made immediately.

The scam is especially deceptive because it references a specific section of the North Carolina Administrative Code and includes a link that appears to mimic the official ncdot.gov website. Victims are directed to pay a $6.99 charge within 12 hours.

North Carolina isn’t alone. DMVs in Maryland, Virginia, New York, and other states have also issued alerts. Florida officials even launched a dedicated webpage to help drivers avoid scams.

Authorities are urging drivers to avoid clicking on suspicious links and to verify any notices directly with their state DMV.
