North Carolina Governor Josh Stein is set to visit Chapel Hill this afternoon to assess flood damage. Governor Stein declared a state of emergency in response to Tropical Storm Chantal.

Governor Stein’s emergency declaration covers 13 counties, including Wake, Chatham, Durham, Lee, Moore, Orange, Person, and Alamance. The declaration aims to help storm victims receive critical aid and open the door for additional funding to support long-term recovery.

Stein is expected to tour Eastgate in Chapel Hill, one of the areas hit hardest by flooding. Business owners have already started cleaning up, removing damaged drywall and flooring. The estimated cost of damage in that area alone is around $17 million.

He also plans to visit Camelot Village, where rising floodwaters forced families from their homes and destroyed vehicles. Damage there is estimated to exceed $3 million.

Residents and business owners hope the governor’s visit will lead to meaningful support. Many say the emergency declaration is a first step toward getting the resources they need to rebuild.
