Central North Carolina is entering its fourth heat wave of the year, with dangerously high temperatures expected to persist through at least the middle of next week. The combination of sweltering highs in the 90s and near 100, along with oppressive humidity, will push heat index values or “feels-like” temperatures to a scorching 105 to 115 degrees.

A Heat Advisory is in effect today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., warning residents of feels-like temperatures between 105 and 110 degrees. Looking ahead, an Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for the weekend, from Saturday morning through Sunday evening, with heat index values forecasted to climb above 110 degrees and possibly exceed 115.

Forecasters say afternoon highs will hover around 100 degrees, while overnight lows won’t provide much relief, staying near 80 degrees. Surface winds are shifting from the southeast, bringing in increased humidity and moisture — further fueling the extreme heat.

Officials are urging residents to take precautions to stay safe:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun
  • Check on elderly relatives and neighbors

In addition, never leave children or pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in just minutes.

Stay weather-aware and follow guidance from local officials as this intense heat wave unfolds.
