Keep scrolling for our list of 15 music films that we think need to be reworked for Broadway…like, ASAP! Let us know if you agree, or have some other suggestions:
1. SPARKLE (1976)
Although Dreamgirls does in fact exist, the original that inspired it definitely deserves, too!
2. KRUSH GROOVE (1985)
This would be a rap fan’s delight, and also help extend all that positive energy from the culture shared during “Hip-Hop 50” festivities last year.
3. DO THE RIGHT THING (1989)
Although technically not a musical film, Radio Raheem’s boombox alone plays an enormously significant role in Do The Right Thing and could easily do a great job at melding the scenes together if done right. Also, Rosie’s opening scene dance segment would look amazing live.
4. HOUSE PARTY (1990)
We need this one for the ’80s and ’90s hip-hop heads!
5. THE FIVE HEARTBEATS (1991)
Although already rumored to be in the works, hopefully this will serve as a reminder to Robert Townsend that we still need this to happen!
6. CB4 (1993)
The hilarity alone would fill seats nightly and bring a fresh, urban take to Broadway.
7. 8 MILE (2002)
The raw, almost autobiographical essence of 8 Mile would make it a compelling stage play if the lead actor possesses even an ounce of the realness portrayed by Eminem in the film.
8. THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS (2003)
This one screams Chloe Bailey in the lead!
9. RAY (2004)
There would be no dry eyes in the stands, for sure.
10. HUSTLE & FLOW (2005)
Now this could be a night of good, ghetto fabulous fun!
11. IDLEWILD (2006)
The film itself was shot in the style of a Broadway play, so this one would be a given.
12. SOUL MEN (2008)
If only Bernie Mac were still here to give this project the blessing it deserves.
13. BLACK NATIVITY (2013)
While the film itself is actually based on the 1961 play of the same name by Langston Hughes, this 2013 movie adaptation has a NYC-based story all of its own that would make for a very relatable stage play during the holiday season.
14. BEYOND THE LIGHTS (2014)
A modern-day cautionary tale of the music industry that we think little girls everywhere would respond to favorably if done well on a live platform.
15. CHI-RAQ (2015)
This would be a certified hit and, being that violence is unfortunately still a big issue in the Windy City, could help shine some light on why the crime in Chicago must end.
