Hard to believe it’s been seventeen years since we lost the late great Chad Lamont Butler, best known to Hip Hop fans across the world at Pimp C, one half of the legendary Port Arthur rap duo UGK. Since his passing on December 4, 2007 so much has changed about the culture: The digital space now offers indie artists a whole new way to reach fans, Southern artists have cemented their influence on a generations of listeners and Bun B, the other half of the Underground Kingz, has become not only a revered elder statesman but a thriving entrepreneur courtesy of his beloved Trill Burger franchise. Pimp was very respectful of the [musicians] that came before him. R&B, jazz, different blues and stuff; he was a big Wes Montgomery fan, he was a big [John] Coltrane fan, he was a George Benson fan. He was really respectful of music in that sense and he was respectful of the fact that he knew the opinions and the way that our elders looked at our music at the time; this was in our earliest inception. – Bun B, MTV News
