A book by a former aide to two-time Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, in which he details Edwards’ extramarital affair, is set for release on Feb. 2.

“The Politician: An Insider’s Account of John Edwards’s Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down” was written by Andrew Young, who previously claimed to have fathered a child with Edwards’ mistress, Rielle Hunter.

Amazon.com describes Young’s book as follows: “The underside of modern American politics – raw ambition, manipulation, and deception – are revealed in detail by Andrew Young’s riveting account of a presidential hopeful’s meteoric rise and scandalous fall. Like a non-fiction version of ‘All the King’s Men,’ ‘The Politician’ offers a truly disturbing, even shocking, perspective on the risks taken and tactics employed by a man determined to rule the most powerful nation on earth.”

The New York Times reported in September that Young wrote in the book that Edwards fathered Hunter’s daughter and worked with Fred Baron, his campaign finance chairman, to hide that secret.

Baron, who died last year of cancer, previously admitted that he paid for Hunter and Young’s family to resettle in California. He said he provided the money on his own.

A federal grand jury in Raleigh is looking into how Edwards used campaign funds. Hunter spent nine hours at the federal courthouse in August while the grand jury was meeting, but it’s unclear whether she testified because grand jury proceedings are secret.

Edwards admitted in August 2008 – eight months after dropping out of the presidential race – that he had an affair with Hunter, who had been hired by his campaign to produce promotional videos. He said the affair ended in 2006, and he has denied fathering her child.

Sources have told WRAL News that they expect Edwards to publicly admit paternity of the child, most likely after the investigation into the use of his campaign funds is over.
