An Ohio homeless man named Ted Williams is the darling of the Internet today after a YouTube video captured the wild-haired man’s golden radio voice.
A former DJ, Williams fell on hard times in the mid 1990s and ended up on the side of I-71 and Hudson Street in Columbus, holding a hand-made sign that began, “I have a God-given gift of voice.” Doral Chenoweth III of the Columbus Dispatch taped Williams for his story, and before you could say “Susan Boyle,” Williams was a star. What a voice! It almost makes you feel obligated to do or say something monumental, just to warrant his narration.
This morning, a tidied-up Williams fielded job offers on the phone as he visited WNCI’s Dave & Jimmy morning show and then chatted with CBS’s The Early Show. Williams discussed his hard times with the radio jocks, admitting his addictions to alcohol and other drugs, but it was heartwarming to see him reveling in a familiar studio setting with a headset and microphone. The man was happiness personified. And NFL Films’ director of post-produciton Kevin McLoughin, who hires all the voiceover talent for the outlet, tells EW that he’s been attempting to reach Williams about a possible job. “It wasn’t so much the radio-voice thing, but the way he sounded when he conveyed his own story,” says McLoughin. “He had a presence. I said to my colleagues, we’ve got to get him in here. He could be a diamond in the rough.”
