Elizabeth City State running back Daronte McNeill rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns and caught a pass for another score as ECSU downed visiting Bowie State 23-12 on Saturday. With the win, the Vikings wrap up the CIAA Northern Division and will face off against Winston-Salem State in the CIAA Championship Game November 12 at Durham County Stadium.

This is the third time in six years the Vikings will be in the championship game. They lost the previous two to North Carolina Central (2006) and Shaw (2008). With McNeill’s 159 yards rushing he goes over the 1,000-yard plateau for the second time in as many years. With the Vikings leading 10-6 in the fourth quarter, McNeill rushed for his first of two touchdowns on an 8-yard run with 12:20 remaining extending the Vikings lead to 16-6. Four plays into the Bulldogs’ ensuing drive Josh Brooks picked off a Tyrae Reid pass at the Viking 4-yard line and returned it 86 yards to the Bowie State 10-yard line. Two plays later McNeill had his second touchdown of the day, this time from three yards out which put the Vikings up 23-6.

Howard 35, North Carolina A&T 28 OT

The Aggies had their three-game winning streak snapped in Washington, DC. Aggies quarterback Lewis Kindle was stopped at the 1-yard line in overtime to preserve the Homecoming victory for the Bison. After an 82-yard kickoff by Howard’s Aquanius Freeman midway through the fourth quarter, A&T tied the game at 28 on a 3-yard Ricky Lewis touchdown that was set up by a 20-yard completion to Lewis. Chris Neal put the Aggies in perfect position to win the game in regulation when he punched the ball out of the arms Howard running back Andra Williams. Brandon Hover recovered the ball at the Aggies 49 with 3:51 remaining. But on 3rd-and-1 from the Bison 43, Howard linebacker Keith Pough buried Mike Mayhew for a four-yard loss, setting up the overtime period. N.C. A&T won the toss and elected to let the Bison have the ball first. Howard used five plays and a 3-yard touchdown run by Terrance Lefall to take a one touchdown lead. Aggie running back Mike Mayhew, the MEAC’s leading rusher, recorded his fourth-straight 100-yard rushing game finishing with 115 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns. The Aggies play their second of four-straight road games on Saturday at Norfolk State.
