Charlotte

JUNETEENTH 2003….The Juneteenth Planning Committee invites you to our 6th year celebration of Freedom. This years theme is “Community Education”.The celebration will begin with a kick-off banquet on 6-18-03 at the Sheraton Hotel Uptown and the 19th & 20th, Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation will sponsor the festival events at Independence Park. On the 21st and 22nd, we will have a Health Care Village, Education Village and the Entertainment Pavilion. We will have varied vendors, dance troupes, Reggae, Poetry and Jazz. The festival is free and open to all. Come join us!

Winston-Salem

Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, North Carolina will host its 6th Annual Historical Juneteenth Celebration on June 14,2003 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The church is located at 795 Crawford Place at Old North Cherry Street in Winston-Salem. Highlights of the day will be historical comments, Otesha Dancers, family emphasis, fellowship, love for each other, gospel music and more. The General Assembly of North Carolina in Session 1999 ratified a bill that Juneteenth is a state observance. For a schedule of events or other information contact Mt. Greensboro

UMU,Inc. will host Greensboro,NC’s 8th Annual Juneteenth Festival on Saturday June,21,2003 from 12 noon to 6 pm at Barber Park located at 1500 Dans Road (off East Florida Street) with free admission and parking. Come,join us for a fun filled day for all with special emphasis on fathers, family and positive role models from within the community for our African-American Youth . There will be a variety of family orientated entertainment for all ages,Kiddie Korner,Health Fair,Mentoring Groups,Public Servants Awareness and Voter Registration.Vendors will be selling an array of African and African- American clothing,art,and artifacts ,specialty items,crafts and delicious foods.Persons interested in Vending,Performing,and for other inquires including joining The National Association of Juneteenth Lineage ,Inc.(NAJL)

Jacksonville

The Geeorgetown Community Organization Inc. Will be hosting the Second Annual Juneteenth Celebration to be held on Saturday,June 14,2003 from 10am until 7pm Admission is free. While focused on the African American Heritage,the celebration is a Multi-Cultural event that we hope will bring unity within the Georgetown Community and extend to communities in and around the Onslow County area. The festival will be held at the Georgetown Park Located on Georgetown Rd. next to the Onslow County Water Dep. Bring your lawn chairs and prepare to have a wonderful time. It will be a fun filled day for everyone with special emphasis on fathers, families and individuals within the community drawing upon the encouragement of pasitive mentors for our valuable African American Youth. We will provide entertainment in variety for all age groups, including a kids corner, live music, live music,storytelling and a voter registration information booth. We will also provide you the opportunity to purchase an array of specialty items,crafts and delicious foods from our local vendors. In addition, we also will hold a Sweet Potato Pie contest for cash prizes with an entrance fee of $10.00. Elizabeth City

River City Community Development Corporation’s 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration, a multi-cultural community celebration, that will include acclaim local and national entertainment. There will be musical groups, arts and craft vendors and many activities for the children. This event will take place, June 14, 2003 beginning 8:00am-6:00pm, at Elizabeth City’s Waterfront Park. Raeford

Join us and “The Healing Force”for Juneteenth 2003. On Saturday, June 21st, the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Festival and Celebration for Hoke County will be hosted at the Library Outdoor Stage in Raeford, North Carolina at 334 North Main Street. The theme for this year’s festivities is in keeping with community building perspectives of honoring öur families and our community and building for the future. Special guest performers will be the world-traveled Winston-Salem based performing artists “The Healing Force”. You can count on added entertainment and fun provided by Gran’daddy Junebug, Reverend Curtis and the New True Belivers, and others. KidSpace will also be available for our youngsters that will include face painiting, balloon art, and a petting zoo. Opening ceremony is at 10:30 am. Tarboro

The Edgecombe County N.A.A.C.P. will be sponsoring our 2nd Annual Juneteenth celebration. The celebration will take place at Indian Lake in Tarboro from 12 p.m.-7:00 p.m. The scheduled activities will consist of a gospel explosion, praise teams, steppers, poetry, live disc jockey, K-9 demonstration, voter registration drive, face painting, clowns, health fair, food, vendors and much more.

Hickory

This will be hosted by The Hickory Cultural Enhancement Committee, to be held on Saturday June 21,2003 in the Ridgeview Community. There will be a variety of games (sack races, softball, group games etc) for the children, Gospel selections from various choirs from the community, storytelling, food, dance. Our theme is Celebration of Life: Weaving the past into the present.

Dunn

The Second Annual Juneteenth Celebration at the Academic Center for Excellence, Inc. (ACE) is co hosted with the Pillar of Truth Church, Dunn, N.C. and will be held June 13,14 and 15, 2003. This year’s theme is “Affirming Self”. The schedule includes: 7 p.m. Friday Worship Service at the Pillar of Truth Church with special guest Elder A. Pitts from Chicago Heights, Il.; Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 Family Day activities are at the Academic Center for Excellence campus, featuring workshops on the National Black Empowerment Agenda, education, voter registration, politics, econominc development, liberation theology. There will be day long children’s activities, films, vendors and a family style barbeque. At 4:00 p.m. Joyce Grear returns this year to perform “Harriet Tubman”. Judge Ola Lewis who sits in the 13th Judicial District will be the featured speaker for the Annual ACE Awards. ACE Awards are given in the areas of Heritage, Freedom and Inspiration. The Saturday worship service will be at the Pillar of Truth Church 6:30 p.m. On Sunday June 15th, there will be a Father’s Day tribute to the Negro Baseball League featuring Clifford Layton a former league member, memorabilia and films on the league from 3:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Raleigh

This first annual event is sponsored by the Epsicopal Church Women and Christian Social Ministries of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church of Raleigh, NC. The event takes place at 813 Darby Street on the grounds of St. Ambrosse Episcopal Church. It’s an event for the entire family and everyone is invited. The theme is “Building Community through Discipleship and will feature a presentation by Dr. E.B. Palmer, founder of the African-American Complex. Other activities include a health fair and screenings, a skit featuring children from Vital Link School about Rosa Parks and the Montogomery, Alabama bus boycott. There will be a proclamation presented by Raleigh City Councilman Jim West and a historical presentation by lecturere Leonard Hunder.
