The Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim 2,” the sequel to last year’s blockbuster robots/monsters punch-up that made much more money overseas than it did in America, has officially been given a release date of April 7, 2017. Looks like there is still a place for quality films that are also effects-driven spectacles in Hollywood after all.

Pacific Rim” detailed the story of an Earth in the year 2020 where giant robots called Jaegers are created by humans in a global effort to battle the ever increasing threat of alien monsters called Kaiju.

Because of the disappointing US box office return of the $190 million-budgeted film, many didn’t expect to hear from the series again. But the ever growing importance of international markets, particularly Pan-Asian markets like China and Japan, helped net Warner Bros. Studio a healthy profit, so this won’t be the last we see of the Jaegers.

Like last time, co-writer/director Guillermo del Toro will be in the director’s chair and cast members Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron Pearlman are expected but not yet confirmed to return. del Toro mentions in his YouTube announcement that “Pacific Rim” will also be receiving an animated series and ongoing comic book, expanding the universe.
