Ed Reed, announced his retirement Wednesday. This fell just one month shy of Troy Polamalu’s retirement announcement who is arguably known as Reed’s competitor as the greatest safety of the 21st century.

Ed ends his career as a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and five-time first-team All-Pro. The New York Jets will be considered as the last team in which he suited up for during the late 2013 season.

At just 36-years-old, the former Baltimore Ravens’ safety holds the record for having the most interception return yards in NFL history with a grand total of 1,590 yards.

Ed was fortunate to have won the 2012 Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens and with nine interceptions, he tied the NFL record for having the most postseason interceptions when he picked off San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick.

His career totals are: 64 interceptions (sixth all-time) 643 tackles, 11 forced fumbles and 14 touchdowns.

Reed has not participated in an NFL game since 2013. During that time, he had an opportunity to play for the New York Jets and Houston Texans.

Together, the Baltimore Ravens and Reed officially announced his retirement today during a press conference held at 2 p.m.

According to other media outlets, “The team is widely expected to place Reed’s name and jersey in the “ring of honor” next season.”
