Kendrick Lamar has garnered plenty of accolades in his short career but he seems to be stepping it up even more in 2015.

After releasing one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year—and the decade for that matter—Lamar received a different type of distinction yesterday. While the media buzzed over Kanye West’s honorary doctorate degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago yesterday, K. Dot received his own distinguished award from the state of California. Specifically, Lamar received the 35th Generational Icon Award for his work within the Compton Unified School District and through other non-profits in his native city.

“It’s definitely an honor to be right here in front of you guys,” Kendrick said from the Senate Floor. “Being from the city of Compton and knowing the parks that I played at and neighborhoods, I always thought how great the opportunity would be to give back to my community off of what I do in music. In order to do that from a city all the way to a state standpoint and [to] have these young kids look at me as some type of inspiration, it’s really an honor. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for honoring me today.”

Beyond the award itself, Kendrick also got a chance to have a sit-down with California Governor Jerry Brown.
