Everyone was betting on Serena Williams to win the US Open this year. But sometimes, she is just like the rest of us.

In a match where Williams lost control at crucial moments, she had an uncharacteristic loss to Roberta Vinci 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a erratic performance. Vinci had not defeated Serena before, and found a way to hold her ground when she needed.

Ultimately, the match was on Serena’s racket, and the champion could not swing it in her favor. Most of her victories come down to whether she is having a good day or not. Unfortunately, on a day when expectations were running high and history loomed close, she was unable to find the road to victory. Due to her loss, she also lost the chance to being the first woman in over 20 years to take the Grand Slam title since Steffi Graf.

But regardless today’s outcome, she is still one of the greatest tennis players of all time. She just has to wait until next year to break a few more records.
