Young Thug has had a rocky history with Lil Wayne ever since he started running with Wayne’s mentor Brian “Baby” Williams. Because of their similar sound and swag, many have wondered if Baby was replacing an aging Wayne with the much younger Thug.

Wayne has dissed Thugger and Baby repeatedly since late 2014, when he first aired out his frustration that Williams’ Cash Money records won’t release his long-awaited Carter V album. But Thug has made it clear—on many occasions—that he has no beef with Wayne, who he has always credited as his top influence and inspiration. He even named his 2016 mixtape Barter 6 to honor Wayne’s Carter series.

Early Monday morning, Thug tweeted some love to his idol, who announced his retirement from rap last week after a five-year struggle with Williams and Cash Money. In one tweet that’s since been deleted, Thug said, “@LilTunechi I promise I’m holding u (sic) down no matter what… f*** the world and what they think/feel I’m with u for life, ur the reason I rap.” Thug continued, “I just wish u could love me the way I love u big bro… ur my idol for life and I hope ur sorry for bashing me, not knowing how much I love u…”

After deleting one of his tweets, Thug retweeted Wayne’s most recent message to fans: “ain’t lookin for sympathy, just serenity… I’m good y’all, don’t trip.”
