Winnie  Mandela, often known as South Africa’s “Mother of the Nation” has died after being in and out of the hospital for about 3 months, due to an illness. Winnie was a politician and activist who contributed greatly to the efforts made against Apartheid in her country. She was also the second wife of Nelson Mandela, being married to him for 38 years, ultimately getting divorced in 1996.

Winnie never stopped fighting for her country though. At the time of her death she still held membership in parliament. The family has said they will release more information when her services and the details are finalized.
