Normally this would be throwback Thursday, but today is really International Day Of The Girl! What does that mean? That means today is a day about celebrating women in all of their glory!

The United Nations declared today, October 11th the International Day of the Girl Child. In a statement, the UN stated: “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.”

Former First Lady, Michelle Obama and TODAY are hosting  a special event on 30 Rockefeller Plaza to “empower and celebrate girls all over the world.” Performers for the event are Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, and Meghan Trainor. But with all of this Girl Power being shared around the world, little black girls in the US are still fighting an uphill battle.

Studies have shown that black girls are suspended and expelled from school more often than boys. Also, black girls are 20% more likely to be detained than white girls their age.  These are very disturbing facts. So what can we do to change this?

Teach our little girls how to be proud of who they are! Calling a girl a princess doesn’t mean that she gets everything that she wants but it teaches her to hold herself to a high standard. Our world will be a much better place if we all held ourselves to a higher standard.
