History was made yesterday in Raleigh. Cheri Beasley was sworn-in Thursday as the first African American woman Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
Back in February, when Governor Roy Cooper appointed her, he told the press, “I know Justice Beasley to be fair and deeply committed to all North Carolinians. I appreciate her willingness to serve our state in this appointed role.” She started her judicial career in 1999 as a district court judge in Cumberland County. She served four years as an associate judge for the North Carolina Court of Appeals. In 2012, Governor Beverly Perdue appointed her to the Supreme Court.
