RoyalTea’s Resources: How to Self-Examine for Breast Cancer

Source: Sinai Grace / DMC
Self-examinations for breast cancer are an important tool in catching potential signs early. By regularly checking your breasts for lumps, changes in size, shape, or texture, you can become familiar with what’s normal for your body and notice any unusual changes more easily.
How to Perform a Self-Exam
To perform a self-exam, use the pads of your fingers to gently press on different areas of your breasts, both while lying down and standing, such as in the shower. Be sure to check your armpits and collarbone areas as well. Look in the mirror for visible changes like dimpling, puckering, or changes in the nipple.
Contact your doctor for further evaluation if you notice anything unusual, such as a lump or thickening. While many breast changes are harmless, early detection of breast cancer can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment. Regular self-exams, along with mammograms, are vital in staying proactive about breast health.
