Kanye West's Return: Everything We Know About The Yeezy 800 Sneakers

Ye has never needed a traditional rollout to get the sneaker world talking. A few unexpected pictures on social media are usually enough, and that is exactly what happened when the artist and designer shared an early look at several unreleased Yeezy shoes and boots. The standout from the preview was a mysterious all-black runner that Ye later confirmed is officially called the Yeezy 800.

The Yeezy 800 embraces the chunky, retro-running look that has become increasingly popular again. Its upper combines mesh with leather and suede-like overlay panels around the eyelets, forefoot and heel. One of the more unusual touches is the mesh material wrapping around the midsole, giving the shoe a layered, almost unfinished appearance that feels right at home within Ye’s design language. For now, the sneaker has only been shown in an all-black colorway.

Ye also previewed several military-inspired boots alongside the Yeezy 800, suggesting that the runner may be part of a much larger footwear push. The heavy construction, dark colors and rugged styling of the collection feel reminiscent of the boots that appeared throughout earlier Yeezy seasons. Still, the 800 is the model currently receiving most of the attention because it appears to be one of Ye’s most conventional-looking independent sneakers in some time.

That does not mean the Yeezy 800 is a completely safe design. Its exaggerated proportions, layered materials and thick sole still make it look different from the average lifestyle runner. The silhouette appears to borrow some of the bulky energy that made the Yeezy Boost 700 “Wave Runner” a favorite, but its darker palette and exposed mesh give it a more industrial feel. The Wave Runner helped push the “dad shoe” trend further into the mainstream after years in which slimmer knit sneakers dominated the market.

That ability to influence what people wear has always been one of Yeezy’s biggest strengths. Ye began making noise in footwear with Nike’s Air Yeezy before eventually joining Adidas, where the Yeezy Boost 350 helped turn the partnership into a mainstream phenomenon. Shoes such as the 350 V2, Yeezy 500 and Boost 700 became regular sights on the street, while Foam Runners and Yeezy Slides helped make futuristic foam footwear feel normal. Even designs that were mocked when first revealed often became highly sought-after once people saw them styled and worn in everyday life.

The Yeezy story changed dramatically when Adidas ended its partnership with Ye in October 2022 and stopped producing Yeezy-branded products. Since then, Ye has attempted to rebuild the label independently, releasing lower-priced clothing and experimental footwear such as the Yeezy Pods and new slide designs. That makes the Yeezy 800 especially interesting: instead of relying on Adidas technology, branding, and distribution, the sneaker represents another opportunity for Ye to prove that people remain invested in Yeezy as a standalone company.

There are still several major questions surrounding the show. Ye and Yeezy have not announced a release date, retail price, available sizes, or purchasing platform for the Yeezy 800. It is also unclear whether the all-black pair will be the first colorway sold or whether the model is still only in the sample stage. Until more information is revealed, all fans can do is study the early pictures and wait — which, throughout Yeezy’s history, has often been enough to keep the hype moving.
