R. Kelly's defense lawyer decried federal prosecutors' use of RICO laws in their trial against the singer during an appeal hearing on Monday. Jennifer Bonjean called the use of the law "preposterous."

The release comes three months after the singer was found guilty of federal sex crimes in his hometown of Chicago.

On Tuesday, R. Kelly filed two motions through his lawyer with a judge in Chicago to have either his federal conviction for child pornography and sexual abuse overturned or grant a new trial. Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly's lead attorney wrote in the motion that the prosecution used "perjured testimony" from a clinical psychologist in the case in addition to claiming the government didn't prove fully that the singer abused the minors in question.
